INDOOR LIGHTING: FIRST STEPS
You've invested plenty of time and money to create your dream home and take pride in all of its special features, but your
décor is simply not complete without a well-planned lighting scheme. The quality and placement of your lights can make or break the look of a room, and a great way to maximize the appearance and functionality of any space is to install lighting in layers.
The technique of using one boring ceiling light to light an entire room is officially out, as more and more homeowners are discovering the benefits of using the lighting layer technique, and what a dramatic difference it can make.
All successful design schemes combine three main types of lighting in "layers:" Ambient, Task, and Accent lighting.
- Ambient Lighting, or general lighting, is the source of overall light in a room.
- Task Lighting is used to add brightness to areas of a room where specific tasks are performed, such as reading or cooking.
- Accent Lighting draws attention to your home's best features (and away from unsightly ones).
The lighting layer approach requires a greater investment, but it remains one of the most effective ways to dramatically enhance the look of any home. And there is no need to be a lighting expert or break the bank – we offer affordable options for all three types, and fixtures are often available in coordinating "families" to allow you to easily achieve a harmonized look.
